USA supports Greece remaining in the Eurozone, according to a White House official, who stressed the need “to respect Greek citizens and their decision.”
Ben Rhodes, deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications and Speechwriting, during NATO’s summit in Chicago, said that the “Obama government realizes that Greeks have undergone huge sacrifices.”
In response to the question whether there is anxiety about the Greek election outcome, he said that “it is Greeks’ responsibility to decide if they want their future to be connected with the Eurozone or not. And we respect their decision.”
As for the G8 decision, the American official explained that they want Greece to remain in the Eurozone, but only under the condition it observes its commitments. Moreover, the key issue, according to Rhodes, is that Greece should promote the development strategy of the country.
“If you take a closer look at the life of the Greeks after the austerity measures, you realize their sacrifices. We should find a way to take advantage of the opportunities that will make the folk’s life better, in the end,” he explained.
He concluded, “we recognize that Greeks have to take a very serious decision and that European leaders announced they organize their next move, no matter what the elections show. “It is fair enough to do so but we should respect Greek people when they will have chosen their new leader,” he reiterated.
