‘Friends of Downtown’ Honors Hellenic National Museum of Chicago

Each year, Friends of Downtown honors  all the various things that make downtown Chicago one of the world’s most unique places. At this year’s award ceremony, the National Hellenic Museum was included in the 2011 winners.

Friends of Downtown describes itself as the integral component of the American city of Chicago. It is “the voice for intelligent planning and urban design for downtown Chicago. Founded in 1981, we are recognized as a vital and influential component of the city’s design and building process.”

Their purpose is to ensure that downtown Chicago “remains the well-designed, vibrant, economic heart of the city.”

The National Hellenic Museum was awarded Best New Cultural Institution for its contribution to the city’s cultural and artistical development.

“We are honored to be recognized by Friends of Downtown,” said NHM President Stephanie Vlahakis. She added that the institution representatives feel satisfied, taking into account that they added “a new voice to Chicago’s already rich cultural landscape by sharing the story of the Greek journey from Ancient times to Modern Greek America.”

The NHM opened its gates to the public in 2011 and displays various exhibits representing Greek culture and History. Religion, World War I & II and ancient Greek Mythology are only some of its fascinating exhibitions, which managed to bring in its first award, and to prove that “Chicago’s Greek Town has a lot more to offer than just great food.”
