Greece and France Hold Joint Celebration of World Press Freedom Day 2012

Οn the occasion of the annual celebrations for World Press Freedom Day 2012 on May 3, the permanent missions of France and Greece in the UN in cooperation with UNESCO have organized a joint conference on the dangers threatening or hindering journalists from doing their job.

The event entitled, “Protecting Journalists: Lessons Learned and Prospects 5 years After Resolution 1738,” was hosted at the North Lawn Building, UNHQ, and aimed at underlining the ever current issue of the protection of journalists in armed conflicts.

Despite the measures taken so far, and the repeated calls to show respect towards the law protecting journalists working in conflict zones, real life shows that several steps must be taken before the phenomenon of attacked journalists and media staff changes for the better.

For France and Greece, main sponsors of the Resolution 1738, it is of major importance to launch follow-up work on the implementation of this Resolution since its adoption in 2006.

Every year, May 3 is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence, and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the act of their profession.

May 3 was proclaimed World Press Freedom Day the UN General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.
