White House Welcomes Greek Deal

The White House Tuesday welcomed the deal reached by Eurozone finance ministers to prevent an impending Greek default, but warned more still needs to be done to resolve the drawn out sovereign debt crisis.
“The Europeans have taken important steps to deal with the crisis,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters during a regular briefing.

This same message was conveyed by President Barack Obama to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during a telephone call, he added.

However, “it also remains the case that additional steps should be taken,” Carney said.
“We encourage our European friends and allies to take those steps to strengthen the firewall, to ensure that the reforms that have been taking place in countries within the Eurozone are furthered and carried out in a way that helps ease the situation.
“So progress still needs to be made,” he said.

The United States will continue to offer advice and counsel, Carney continued, noting U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has spent a lot of time in recent months in discussions on these issues with his European counterparts.
