Event Dedicated to Greek-Cypriot Author Lucy Maroulleti in Astoria

An event was held in Astoria to honor the Greek-Cypriot author and co-founder of Cypreco of America and Aktina Productions, Lucy Maroulleti, at Stathakeio Cultural Centre.

Cypreco of America and Aktina Productions organized this event to honor the cultural work of Lucy Maroulleti, who died in 2005.

Maroulleti was born Loukia Constantinidou to Greek-Cypriot parents in Egypt on February 17, 1930. Her parents moved to Cyprus in the early 1940s during World War II and she lived in Cyprus until the Turkish invasion of 1974. She fled her home along with 200,000 other Greek Cypriots in the face of invading Turkish armies, never to return.

She moved with her family to London for a short period of time and then immigrated to the United States. She settled in Astoria, where she spent the rest of her life.

A documentary was screened during the event, presenting the work of Lucy Maroulleti, who was the first Greek-American in New York City to establish annual theatrical productions of ancient Greek plays, which she translated into English. The program of the event was organized and presented by the daughter of Lucy Maroulleti, Elena Marouletti.

Poems written by Lucy Maroulleti were read during the event by the poet Polys Kuriakou, while Fay Moschidi interpreted songs of famous musicians accompanied on piano by Glafkos Kontemeniotis.

The Consul Generals to Cyprus and Greece, Koula Sofianou and Giorgos Iliopoulos, the Chairman of the Federation of Hellenic Societies in New York, Ilias Tsekeridis and the Vice President of the Cyprus Federation of America, Christos Nikolaou talked about the work of Lucy Maroulleti during the event.
