Solidarity Protest for Greeks in Manhattan

A solidarity protest for the Greek people currently bearing the harsh austerity measures of the EU and IMF was held on Saturday evening in Manhattan, NY. More than three hundred protesters were gathered outside Liberty Plaza (Zuccotti Park) in the broader Wall Street area.

The enthusiastic gathering included people of all ages and origins and was organized by a small group of Greek academics, students and professionals within the framework of the initiative “World Mobilization Day: We are all Greeks”.

According to the announcement of the organizing group, the protest aimed at denouncing the austerity and social degradation policies imposed on the Greek people by the EU, the ECB and the IMF in cooperation with the non-elected coalition government of the country.

Moreover, the announcement read that Saturday’s protests were organized on a global level because the policies of the banking sector and the anti-popular measures are global as well.

The gathering was attended by students, Greek-Americans and “Occupy Wall Street” members, who protested against demonizing the whole Greek community for the mistaken handling of its politicians over the years.

The mobilization organizers commented lastly that the small numbers that were criticized by some, especially on behalf of the organized Greek-American Community, holds a rather optimistic message for future mobilizations to come.
