Nashville Promoting its Replica of the Parthenon

The city of Nashville in Tennessee is promoting its iconic replica of the Parthenon. The new logo for Metro Nashville Parks shows the Parthenon, the world’s only full-scale replica of the temple in Athens.

The logo also shows beech tree leaves, a species native to Nashville which can be found throughout the park system. It was designed by local graphic artist Ricardo Beron.

The Parthenon replica, owned by the city, was first a fine arts building for the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It was renovated in 1931 and has been open ever since. Art galleries can be found inside, helping to make it a top tourist attraction.

“Our new logo represents a couple of things ‐ our new goal to provide the very best in fiscal stewardship, our renewed commitment to providing the very best in programs, services and green space; and our ecological responsibility to future generations,” said Metro Parks Director Tommy Lynch.

Even the rectangular shape of the logo has meaning. The parks department said the proportions of the logo approximate the proportions inspired by the Parthenon which was determined by the Golden Mean (1:1.618) a formula that was used in classical art and architecture, including the Parthenon, to determine ideal proportions.
