University of Iowa Greek Community Volunteer at Local Elementary Schools

The University of Iowa Greek community has teamed up with local elementary schools to provide tutoring and even help kids hone their chess skills through a new Adopt-A-School program, which began in October.

About 40 UI Greek students volunteer at four participating elementary schools: Lucas, Twain, Grant Wood and Kirkwood. These schools traditionally have been in more need of volunteers, said Kate Moreland, Iowa City Community School District community relations coordinator.

Greek volunteers run different programs at each school. Some students volunteer during recess, some tutor the students throughout the day and others run after-school clubs. The clubs, which vary by school, include a dance club, a book club, a chess club and a sports club. These programs are open to all students at the participating elementary school, but space is limited by the number of Greek volunteers each school has.

The Adopt-A-School program benefits both the elementary school students and the Greek students, said Rachel Kentor, executive directer of the Adopt-A-School program and a senior at UI.The program also strengthens the Greek system’s relationship with the community, she said.
