Greek-American Committee to Provide Assistance to Vulnerable Groups in Greece

Greek – Americans in the metropolitan New York area are taking action to offer assistance to vulnerable groups in Greece; mainly children, senior citizens, and homeless people.

On the initiative of Maria Kratsa, educator, and Leonidas Korahais and Christos Tripoulas, members of the Greek Orthodox Community “Transfiguration of Christ” in Queens, an assembly was held at Stathakeion Center of the Federation of Greek Associations in Astoria, whereby the formation of an 11-member Greek – American Independent Solidarity Committee for Greece was decided.

“Initially, we will collect food to be dispatched as soon as possible, to people facing serious problems”, stated Ms. Kratsa to ANA – MPA, noting that “we will cooperate with schools and local authorities, to ensure the aid is directly provided to those who are actually in great need”.

Ms. Kratsa also mentioned that “as soon as the committee obtains its legal status, we will seek cooperation with larger Diaspora organizations, so as to have a fundraising campaign too, with an aim to provide funds for the basic needs of people and families facing a severe problem of survival”.

Concluding, she noted that “the Committee’s role will be coordinated to mobilize people and organizations who could drastically support the effort, helping our compatriots in Greece with actions”.
