Greek Yogurt Sales on the Rise in the US

There is a tremendous interest on finding out the reasons behind the remarkable rise of the Greek Yogurt sales in the US. While sales 5 years ago reached $60 million annually, today they have skyrocketed at $1.5 billion, which equals to nearly a quarter of the $6.8 billion spent on yogurt in the US every year.

Despite the financial crisis affecting the US economy and the fact that the Greek product is twice as expensive as the national one, Americans are turning to the Greek yogurt for its deep taste and healthy qualities.

According to The Atlantic newspaper, the sales of the Greek yogurt have shown a rise of 2.500% within the past few years, while 70% of the yogurt market is being controlled the two leading Greek yogurt brands in the US; the widely known in Greece FAGE Company and the Chobani Co., which actually belongs to a descendant of a long line of dairy farmers in Turkey.

The reporter underlines that this rise of the Greek Yogurt is reflecting a deeper change in the American gastronomical habits: a turn to more healthy, natural, low-fat and filling food.
