SAE USA Region Coordinator Ted Spyropoulos Receives 2011 Phidippides Award

Hellenic Public Radio-Cosmos FM of NY presented on November 5 the 2011 Phidippides Award to Chicago businessman and current SAE USA Region Coordinator Mr. Ted G. Spyropoulos.

Member of the board of directors of Kosmos FM Mr. Manolis Velivasakis congratulated Mr. Ted Spyropoulos as being one of the leading figures in advocating and preserving Hellenism. “Since the 1970s Mr. Spyropoulos has been continuously supporting and aiding our national interests and issues, such as Greek language education abroad and countless community and environmental issues. Furthermore, his charity work has helped many fellow Greeks throughout the years” said Mr. Velivasakis.

Mr. Spyropoulos on his part spoke of the current financial crisis tantalizing Greece. “The Greek debt crisis is the reflection of a broader crisis in social, cultural, political and financial parameters unable to serve humanity any more. Greece is going through “labor” right now in order to give birth to a new reality. We as Greeks abroad must contribute to our home country’s efforts and act in favor of common interest” told Mr. Spyropoulos.

The Phidippides Award, first presented in 1994, recognizes contributions to the preservation and promotion of Hellenism internationally. The award was inspired by Phidippides, who in 490 BC requested aid of the Spartans in defending Athens from the Persians at Marathon. Phidippides is also know for running to Athens to announce the victory.

The Award was presented during the annual ball of the Community radio station. Among other attendees were the General Consultants of Greece and Cyprus in NY Mrs. Anne Balta and Mrs. Koula Sofianou respectively, municipal and state officials as well as several Greek-American businessmen and community members.
