The Archbishop of America, Mr. Demetrios, was invited by the Ecoumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew to be escorted on August 15 to the Church of Panagia Soumela in Pontos near Trabzon, where he has been attending for the second consecutive year.
The Patriarch Church Service on the day of the Assumption will be held at Panagia Soumela by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew along with the Archbishop Demetrios. The Archbishop of America will go to Istanbul on Friday, 12 August, in order to travel with the Ecumenical Patriarch to Trabzon.
The Archbishop of America will be accompanied by the Senior Archimandrite of the Holy Archdiocese, the Episcope of Fasiani Mr. Antonios, and by the Archdeacon Mr. Panteleimon Papadopoulos who both come from Pontos. The Church of Panagia Soumela, which according to tradition was built in 386 AC by the monks from Athens Varnavas and Sofronios, in a steep side of the Mount Melas, southern of Trabzon, has been a symbol of the Greeks of Pontos for the past 16 centuries.
