Smithsonian Ranks Santorini and the Parthenon Among Top World Destinations

The American magazine Smithsonian ranks Santorini and the Parthenon among the world’s Top world destinations along with the Pyramids of Giza, Ephesus, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, and Machu Picchu.

The magazine states about the Parthenon that the Temple of Athena originally had the vivid colors of red, green and blue until the siege of Morosini in 1687.

The article made reference to the Parthenon Marbles, that had been removed by the Englishman Lord Elgin from the monument between 1801 and 1803, and sold to the British Museum, where they remain till today.

It talks about the architect Bernard Tschumi, one of the designers of the New Acropolis Museum and the Parthenon Gallery. Bernard Tschumi makes a statement for the article in which he expresses his hope for the reunification of the marbles in a single place.

As for the ”virgin” beaches of Santorini, only good things can be said! Tourists who want to visit the black volcanic sand beaches, should remember to take thick towels and sandals with them, as black sand absorbs the heat of the sun.
