In the 19th and 20th century, Greeks went to America to escape from poverty and with hopes of a better quality of live. Generally, they did not have a high level of education, starting out in restaurants and construction sites. From then, they were able to work up and make their fortunes.
Nowadays, the “modern” Greek immigrants have diplomas, Masters or PHDs. They managed to build Greek communities with churches and schools, and they spoke of Greece with admiration and respect. However, they still maintained routed to their motherland, trying to ensure that their children will learn Greek and feel a sense of pride in their country of origin.
