George Varouhakis or Varouh, as he is widely known, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, at the age 102, taking with him his kindness and compassion.
This man led an interesting life, leaving behind his favorite island, Crete, when he first met Hedy Klein, with whom he fell in love, never hesitating to leave his homeland to move to Ohio. There these two young people created a happy home and a family, becoming parents of 3 children.
George Varouh enjoyed great success in his adopted home and created his own business, Varouh Oil, Inc., Elyria, of which he remained president.
Although he left Crete, he never forgot his island. He was active and helpful in the PanCretan Association of America. He initiated the Hedy Varouh Memorial Scholarship Fund at the George Varouh Creatan Club of Cleveland, which awarded scholarships to youths of Cretan descent.
George Varouhakis was a life member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, a life member of the National Petroleum News Advisory Board, Washington D.C., and a life member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Council.
He was a kind and generous man who never forgot his Cretan roots and lived an accomplished life.
