Hellenic American Veterans Memorial Dedicated in Chicago

The Hellenic American Veterans Memorial was officially dedicated in a special ceremony by American Legion Hellenic Post 343 and officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos, on July 4. The stunning monument, designed by architect Roula Alakiotou, has been erected at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Ill. overlooking the pond.

The memorial pays homage to “Hellenes who have fought in the United States Armed Forces from WWI to the present.” Names of these individuals who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice, in defense of freedom and democracy, have been inscribed into the monument, immortalizing their service to our country. Chairman A. Steve Betzelos thanked everyone for their hard work in creating a fitting tribute to our Greek-American heroes. New Consul General of Greece Ioanna Efthymiadou also addressed the crowd. The event culminated with a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”
