Cooking Sensation Vefa Alexiadou Helps Detroit Fundraiser Become a Huge Success

Vefa Alexiadou, Greece’s much respected culinary expert, author of best-selling cookbooks and popular TV personality was in Detroit with her daughter, Alexia recently to attend the Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos Fundraiser.

Vefa, with her passion for cooking and her constant source of inspiration to cooks around the world, made a guest appearance at the benefit to help raise money for the Philoptochos Center of Philanthropy.

Apart from bringing her sunniest recipes from Greece in her latest cookbook, Vefa delighted her audience with Greek cooking and baking demonstrations and welcomed local and international Board Members of Philoptochos to participate in preparing the dishes. The food was then distributed by Vefa’s kitchen team to a local women’s shelter after the event.

Apart from a personal book signing, where her colorful cookery books sold like hot cakes, she also attended a press conference and a church service at St John’s Church in Sterling Heights. Vefa, who has excelled in the kitchen and in business, also attended a benefit lunch sponsored by the Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos. The luncheon took place at the Somerset Inn, Troy in Michigan, where executive chef Mark Kuzma prepared recipes taken from Vefa’s cookbooks. The dishes were then added to the hotel’s dining room menu. Maria Stavropoulos, the luncheon chairman, noted afterwards, “We were so appreciative of her visit and the outstanding support and tremendous hospitality of the women of the communities of the Detroit Metropolis serves.”

Vefa, a university-trained chemist, has written best-selling cookbooks for over 30 years, selling millions in over 35 countries. Alexia, following in her mother’s footsteps is also a prolific author and contributes to several Greek magazines. In March, 2011, they received the “World Best Cooking Series” award for their 24-volume publication, “The Alpha Beta of Cooking”.

Over 400 attendees at the major fundraiser managed to raise $40,000 to establish the center. Vefa’s delicious tastes of traditional Greek cuisine was just the icing on the cake, to get the project off the ground.
