"Rehearsing Revolution:" Aeschylus and More at Hellenic American Academy

On April 10 at 3 pm, the Hellenic American Academy in cooperation with the Hellenic American Women’s Council will present “Rehearsing Revolution: Aeschylus’ Persians and the Greek War of Independence,” at the Academy’s auditorium. Professor Gonda Van Steen, A.N. Cassas Chair in Greek Studies at the University of Florida, will discuss themes from her book Liberating Hellenism from the Ottoman Empire: Comte de Marcellus and the Last of the Classics.

The book explores “the 19th century literature, archaeology and cross-cultural contact by focusing on two key historical episodes that have generally escaped the notice of modern Greece the Near East, and their observers alike…The analysis of these important issues invites the reader to re-examine the age-old conflict and redraw the outlines of mutually dependent Hellenism and Orientalism.”

Professor Van Steen earned a BA degree in Classics in her native Belgium and a PhD degree in Classics and Hellenic Studies from Princeton University. She teaches courses in ancient and modern Greek language and literature. Her research interests include classical drama, French travelers to Greece and the Ottoman Empire, 19th and 20th century receptions of the classics, and modern Greek intellectual history. She is the author of several books.
