Cornell University’s Faculty & Students Protest Against Suspension of Modern Greek Program

The decision of Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences program, to suspend the Modern Greek Language program due to financial limitations, has triggered the immediate reaction and mobilization of Greeks and Philhellenes, students and professors, at the University in New York. According to the decision, the program will be suspended by the end of the 2010-2011 academic year.
Professors and students contacted by the National Herald newspaper, stated they will intensify their efforts and called on the Greek Diaspora to contribute towards the establishment of a reserve fund, ensuring the uninterrupted continuation of the program.
Hellenist Electra Gale Host, Director of Mediterranean Studies, expressed her concern in her statements regarding the future of the program.
Based on Yale University criteria, in regard to program preservation, such as the Greek studies program, a reserve fund should reach 400.000 dollars, as for the establishment of a department, two million dollars are required.
Meanwhile a group of students, led by Alexandros Orphanos, issued an online petition titled “Save Modern Greek at Cornell”, which can be accessed at: www.petitionline.com
Despite Professor Mattoula Halkiopoulou’s offering unpaid services for Modern Greek studies courses for the 2011 – 2011 academic year, the University has not withdrawn their decision.
The Modern Greek Studies Program at Cornell was launched 30 years ago, as part of the Classical Studies Department. A lecturer was hired 10 years ago, with a donation from the Onassis Foundation. The Modern Greek Studies Program includes the teaching of Greek, culture and literature. Students who love Greek music and Rebetika have also formed their own group and events are being organized. The courses of the current semester are followed by seven students, mainly of Greek descent.
