U.S. officials Thursday designated the Sect of Revolutionaries in Greece as a global terrorist organization.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, together with the Justice and Treasury departments, said the group has been tagged with the designation because it has used violence to try to provoke a revolution and overthrow the Greek government, the State Department said.
The group first attacked a police station in February 2009, and since then has threatened the government and the media, the State Department said.
The group said it was responsible for the slaying of a journalist and a police officer, and for shooting attacks on police and TV stations between January 2009 and July 2010, the U.S. government said.
The organization claimed responsibility for the violence, and for threatening to kill others in an effort to hurt the Greek economy and harm the country’s reputation internationally.
“Today’s designation of the Sect of Revolutionaries highlights the U.S. government’s concern regarding terrorist activities carried out by organizations in Europe,” said Daniel Benjamin, ambassador-at-large and the State Department’s coordinator for counterterrorism. “Taking the step of designating the Sect of Revolutionaries demonstrates the U.S. government’s support for Greece’s efforts to disrupt, dismantle and defeat this group.”
