An increase in the number of members of the organization, the intensification of the offering towards the Diaspora and support towards Greece during this difficult period, will be the main priorities of the new Board of Directors of the Hellenic Medical Society of New York. This was pointed out in the “National Herald” by its chairman, Dr. Nicholas Mezitis.
For the first time, a scientific symposium of expatriate women doctors will be organized and a Greek-American doctor will be commemorated. For example, the first Greek-American doctor, Maria Kalopothaki, who graduated from Harvard University in 1862, may be commemorated.
Mr. Mezitis expressed his optimism about the future of the society, celebrating its 75 anniversary and thus “charging the Board with special responsibilities”.
The Hellenic Medical society today has 400 members while Greek-American doctors, along with those of the paramedical professions in the area of New York and surrounding areas, are more than 2,000.
As Mr. Mezitis stated, the society will participate in national parades both on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan and in Philadelphia.
Finally, the society prepares for its annual event in the memory of Dr. George Papanicolaou, who invented the internationally known “Pap Test.”
