Indianapolis: Fire closes Santorini Greek Kitchen

A popular restaurant in Indianapolis’ Fountain Square neighborhood went up in smoke early Tuesday morning. Fire investigators say Santorini Greek Kitchen is likely a total loss, with estimated damage totaling more than $800,000.
Fire crews were called to the restaurant in the 1300 block of Prospect Street around 12:15 a.m. after someone living behind the restaurant noticed smoke coming from the kitchen area in the back of the building. That neighbor woke up the restaurant’s owners, who live next door.
Many from across the area lined the streets to watch as fire crews doused the smoldering building with water for more than two hours.
The owners, Taki and Jeanette Sawi said they had tested their smoke alarms earlier in the day.
Santorini, popular for its Mediterranean menu, outgrew a restaurant on Shelby Street and moved to its current location seven years ago.
The Sawis, who met in 1997 in Santorini, Greece, plan on rebuilding, Burris said.
