"Opa" Musical Opening in Astoria, NYC

Preparations for the musical “OPA”, premiering on October 15th in New York are nearly complete. It is a romantic comedy musical about life, love, and music.  The musical is set on the tiny Greek island of Elia. The story of the musical includes Sophia and Manos, who are a couple with dreams of leaving the island to make a better life for themselves and Costa, who is a friend of theirs and is fixed on staying on the island of his birth to continue with his simple, “olive-filled” life. It’s announced that their island will be dropped from the ferry routes until the economy “levels out”.  Because of this the characters must make desperate choices which will alter the course of their lives forever. After 20 years a boat finally arrives on the island and some of the villagers’ long-held secrets come to the forefront.  They are left with only one choice which is to face their secrets, celebrate life and just say OPA!

The cast is made up of Greek, Greek-American and American actors.  It is expected to be of particular interest not only to Greeks but also to Americans.  “The last time a musical having to do with Greeks, their music and their culture was presented was back in the time of “Zorba” declared producer and choreographer of the musical, Anthoula Katsimatidou.  The musical has been running since 2005 and has received various awards.

The musical will take place in the theater of Holy Archdiocese of America in Astoria.  It is scheduled to begin on October 15th.  “Opa” be in English with Greek subtitles.
