
Markos Kyprianou
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Markos Kyprianou, had yesterday in New York, in the framework of the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly, consecutive meetings with his counterparts from Australia, Mr. Kevin Rudd, from the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and from Indonesia, Mr. Marty Natalegawa.
Minister Kyprianou briefed his interlocutors on the course of the direct negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem, particularly in relation with the package of proposals submitted by the President of the Republic aiming at accelerating the ongoing process. Special emphasis was given to the proposal regarding Famagusta.
During the meetings, bilateral relations were also reviewed and ways to further develop these relations were discussed. Moreover, international and regional issues of common interest were discussed.
More specifically, at his meeting with the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Kyprianou expressed the steady position of the Republic of Cyprus regarding the Middle East question. Mr. Al-Nahyan made a special reference to Minister Kyprianou’s initiative for the increase of maritime transportation of goods to Gaza via Cyprus and expressed his support.
On Sunday evening Mr. Kyprianou attended a dinner, at which Foreign Ministers and UN officials participated and exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East.
