The book had been presented at the Hellenic American Union on November 10, 2008. On that occasion, Vasiliki Chrysanthopoulou, Research Fellow of the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens commented on the book. She referred to it as “a fine contribution to the field of Greek diaspora and Greek folklore studies. “The book includes many songs and poems she’d learned as a child. She recited them to her son, United States Ambassador (retired) Thomas Scotes, who translated them for the book. It ends with a section entitled “Mother’s Last Poems,” which were composed by Vasiliki Scotes when she was ninety-eight years old.”
Mrs. Scotes, whose spent most of her life in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was in Greece to participate in the documentary film, “Vasiliki’s Songs,” which is based on her life. The film will include a concert by renowned singer and composer, Lakis Halkias, in her native village of Theodoriana, Epirus on August 7.
Executive producers of the film are Daniel Cross, president and Mila Ang-Thwin, vice-president of EyeSteelFilm. The film is directed by Athena Scotes, the granddaughter of Mrs. Scotes, along with Effie Bountris.
EyeSteelFilm is based in Montreal, Canada. Their productions include the forthcoming “Last Train Home,” “Chairman George”, “Up the Yangtze” and “Remix Manifesto”.
Sponsorship for the film is coordinated through Documentary Educational Resources, a non-profit organization located in Watertown, Massachusetts. The organization supports the work of independent producers, artists, educators, students and researchers.
