Kansas City Wizards Sign Greek Defender Nikos Kounenakis

The Kansas City Wizards announced the signing of Nikos Kounenakis today. The 32-year-old joins MLS from Cyprus, where he played for Aris Limassol.
After debuting in the Greek first division at age 17 with OFI Crete, the central defender became the first Greek player to win a championship abroad while with Anderlecht in Belgium. A short stint in Holland later and Kounenakis rejoined Crete, where he stayed until last summer with the move to Aris.
“Nick will bring in a wealth of experience to our team,” Wizards manager Peter Vermes said. “He will be a big help to us during the second half of the season.”
Kansas City has conceded 20 goals in 16 games this year and recently signed Shavar Thomas to bolster the backline.
