Greek Independence Day Parade in New York City

Like every year Greeks take over one of the city’s most famous spots, Fifth Avenue, to celebrate Greek Independence Day. The date of the anniversary is March 25 but the parade every year takes place on a different day.

The Greek government was represented by deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, Spyros Kouvelis and members of the parliament.

This year’s stellar Grand Marshalls included Greek-American leader Philip Christopher, news anchor Ernie Anastos and Colonel Matthew Bogdanos
who is an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan (since 1988), author (Thieves of Baghdad), and a colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.

John Catsimatidis, Parade Chairman Emeritus, stated, “The Parade just keeps getting bigger and better every year. One of the most heartening things about the Parade progress is the number of children’s groups who have joined the march. Their day will always remain a fond memory and ensure Greek Independence Day Parades far into the future.”

Besides honoring their heroes and world justice; the parade is an event that allows Greek Americans to celebrate their heritage. Greeks in New York are very proud of this event that has been a New York City tradition since 1938.

This year Telly Savalas’s daughter Ariana was present in the parade and sang for the crowd on this beautiful sunny day.
