The Journey to Greece program – also known as The Journey, which is offered by AHEPA in collaboration with the University of Indianapolis in Athens, enters its fifth consecutive year in 2010 with the sponsorship support of the National Hellenic Society. Journey to Greece 2010 1st Session starts July 3 and ends July 16 and 2nd Session starts July 10 and ends August 6.

The Journey to Greece, which combines classes in Greek studies with excursions to places of interest, serves to introduce students, some for the first time, to the beauty of Greece, its history and its culture. Since the majority of students are Greek-Americans, the Journey holds a particular significance for them as they return to their ancestral home.

High level meetings have become important Journey events and each year the students have been invited to visit the US Embassy and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Athens.

The University of Indianapolis, a top tier U.S. University accredited by the prestigious Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, has worked with AHEPA to offer the program since 2006. The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the largest association of Greek Americans and philhellenes in the world, is well known for its work in philanthropy, education and promotion of Hellenism.

Nick Karakostas, AHEPA’s Supreme President, remarked “The Journey to Greece program has proved to be an outstanding success. Each year the University of Indianapolis has offered students a valuable learning experience which will influence them throughout their lives. We are very grateful for the support of the NHS, which will further serve to improve that experience.”

The National Hellenic Society, whose mission is to celebrate Hellenic heritage by sponsoring and organizing programs and activities that promote and preserve the values and ideals of Hellenic culture, first became involved in the Journey to Greece in 2009 offering important sponsorship for the students’ pilgrimage to visit His All Holiness Bartholomew I. This year the NHS are providing important funding for an educational cruise in the Aegean sea which will take the students to many places of historical interest while exposing them to Greek island life and culture.
