Constantinos Gatzis has been awarded the Athenagoras Medal. Archbishop Demetrios, awarded the distinguished musician Constantinos Gatzis of the Greek homogeneity, with the Medal of Patriarch Athenagoras the 1st during a special ceremony held in the parish of the Annunciation of Mother Mary in Port Jefferson, New York.
Mr. Gatzis, who for years has been directing the choir of the church of St. Catherine and St. George’s of Astoria in New York, has studied piano and violin in the School of Music and Arts of the American Metropolis and voice studies at the Conservatory of the Brooklyn County.
He also holds a University degree in music from Queens College and master’s degree from the University of New York. Mr. Gatzis has been awarded in recognition of his work for a lifetime and especially the important contribution of his talent and services to the development and maintenance of church music in the metropolitan area in which the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese has its base.
The Medal of the First Patriarch Athenagoras was established in 1996 by the Association of Greek Orthodox Musicians. It is awarded to recognize brilliant personalities and established supply in church music.
