Giannoulias Still Leads Tuesday’s Primary

alexi-giannouliasU.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias was in Galesburg on Friday, campaigning ahead of Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Giannoulias will face Chicago attorney Jacob Meister, radiologist Robert Marshall, former city of Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman and former Chicago Urban League President Cheryle Jackson in the primary election.
During a brief visit to Galesburg, Giannoulias stopped at Innkeeper’s coffee shop. He said he wanted to represent “ordinary working class Americans” and not “special interests.”
Giannoulias was elected state treasurer in 2006. Before that he worked as vice president of Broadway Bank, which was founded by his father. He said his campaign was going well.
“I’m excited about it,” he said.
His focus is on the economy and creating jobs. “I think voters are very disenchanted,” Giannoulias said. “They are angry and there are enormous challenges ahead of us.”
The state treasurer admitted that the anger he encountered was directed at both Republicans and his own party. He is ahead of his Democratic rivals in polls and also ahead of Republican Mark Kirk, who is considered the strongest challenger to Democrats for President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.
Giannoulias criticized Kirk as a political insider who would do little for Illinois: “He’s steeped in D.C. politics,” he said of his Republican rival.
Giannoulias said he had made a commitment to never take any money from lobbyists to fund his political career. But he has been criticized for connections to his family’s bank, which gave loans to convicted influence-peddler Tony Rezko. Giannoulias was chief loan officer at Broadway from 2002 to 2006. At Innkeeper’s Friday, Giannoulias was keen to focus on the present, rather than the past. He dismissed claims by his Democratic rival Hoffman that his tenure at the bank raised questions about his judgment and connections.
Returning to the economy, he said that if elected he would work to implement targeted tax cuts for businesses that would stimulate job creation. For example, he said he was proposing a 90-day job creation tax credit for small businesses.
He also said he was “very proud” of his time as state treasurer.
“I promised we would bring a high level of ethics and transparency to the office and we did that,” he said.

“Illinois Tough” U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin will say at a Sunday (today) Belvidere news conference that the Rockford area would not have been ignored for federal stimulus funding if he had been in Washington. “The Boone-Winnebago-Stephenson region needs a Washington fighter, not another Washington insider,” Martin says. “ My principal opponent Mark Kirk was said by the Chicago Sun-Times today (Sunday) to be hiding in a ‘bunker.’ If Kirk is hiding now, what will he be like after he is elected? My political activism spearheaded the development of I-39,” Martin notes. “Boone-Winnebago-Stephenson Counties need a vigorous advocate, not losers of the Quinn-Durbin variety. If Durbin can’t deliver for Illinois with his stooge in the White House, what is he going to do when Republicans take over in November?” Martin will state. Martin will also speak to Boone County Republicans at a Lincoln Day Luncheon. Martin promises to “Deliver for Downstate”
