Fifty letters written by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to a publishing colleague and friend have been acquired by the University of Texas, school officials announced Friday.
Onassis, who died in 1994, was the widow of President John F. Kennedy and of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. She became a book editor at Doubleday & Co. in 1978, and her letters to Ray Roberts, with whom she worked for a time, were chipper and appreciative.
“It’s Autumn in New York and you are Santa Claus — I can’t believe the marvelous pile of books you sent me — ‘Julia,’ Coastal New England, Balthus, Karsh — they are all treasures,” Onassis wrote in October 1983.
In December 1990, she wrote: “I cant BELIEVE it — Little Brown will fire you if you keep giving me these treasures.” Roberts was at that time working at the Little, Brown publishing house.
The letters, most of them handwritten, date from 1978 to 1992. They were donated to UT’s Harry Ransom Center by Roberts, who died in August, said Alicia Dietrich , a spokeswoman for the humanities research library and museum.
The collection, which officials said will be accessible once processed and cataloged, also includes other materials, such as an invitation to a cocktail party, news clippings and a copy of the exhibition catalog, “A Frenchman in Camelot, The Decoration of the Kennedy White House by Stephane Boudin.”
