A political newcomer, George Maragos is the new conroller of Nassau County. Maragos, a businessman of the Greek Diaspora who edged out two-term incumbent Howard Weitzman by 644 votes, was sworn in as Nassau County comptroller on Sunday. He is the first Greek – American to be elected for such a prominent position of the committee. The ceremony, which took place at the Inn Hotel in New Hyde Park of Long Island, was attended by the new President of the Committee Ed Mangano, Greek – American Senator Dean Skelos and other legislators of the committee, as well as members and representatives of the Greek Diaspora, businessmen, friends and supporters of George Maragos.
A Republican from Great Neck, Maragos told about 300 supporters that two principles will guide him as he seeks to restrain spending and right county finances.
“I am proud of your trust in me. This victory that we are celebrating belongs to each end everyone of you” stated with evident emotions, Mr. Maragos. “I will watch your money as my own,” he said at The Inn at New Hyde. He then expressed his gratitude for the Republican Party, as well as the Conservative Party for their support.
