Greek-American Gets Married in Indian Orphanage

Wedding destinations have become more surprising, but getting married at an orphanage near Calcutta, India is very unusual. Greek American Dr. Angelo Volandes (photo left), and his -now- wife  Aretha Davis, selected that location as their wedding destination. The Greek Orthodox ceremony was performed on Dec. 13, by Rev. Andrew P. K. Mondal  at the girls’ orphanage in India run by the Philanthropic Society of the Orthodox Church, where the bridegroom’s mother had volunteered in 2000.

“Instead of a big fat Greek wedding, we donated funds and asked our family and friends to donate funds [as well],” Dr. Volandes said. The funds will be used for college scholarships for the orphan girls.

Volandes and Aretha met in 1989 in a freshmen ethics class at Harvard University. They had a common goal to contribute into making the world a better place for the poor and less fortunate. Today Dr. Angelo Volandes is a medical ethicist at Harvard who specializes in end-of-life decision-making.

In the future, the couple plans to be visiting the orphanage at least once every year.
